3 History

From the point of view of the general relativity community the history of analogue models can reasonably neatly (but superficially) be divided into an “historical” period (essentially pre-1981) and a “modern” period (essentially post-1981). We shall in the next Section 3.1 focus more precisely on the early history of analogue models, and specifically those that seem to us to have had a direct historical connection with the sustained burst of work carried out in the last 20 years.
