The process was proposed by Ritus [347348] and Chiu & Stabler [99]; the most recent formulae for Qphνot were derived by Itoh et al. [215216217]. Formula (263View Equation) implies that if T ≪ Tpe then n γ ∝ e−Tpe∕T. Therefore, Qphνot is exponentially suppressed with decreasing temperature or increasing density. Additional damping of Qphot ν results from electron degeneracy. However, if electrons are nondegenerate, phot Qν can be stronger than plas Q ν.
